The 2023 presidential candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, says the tragic earthquake in Morocco and attendant loss of over 2,000 lives and damage to historical sites is a sobering reminder of nature’s unpredictability.
The former Nigerian Vice President stated this in a statement he personally signed on Sunday.
Morocco’s interior ministry says more than 2,000 lives have been lost and 1,400 injured since the 6.8-magnitude earthquake, the biggest to hit the North African country in 120 years, hit.
The heaviest casualties are said to be in provinces just south of Marrakesh.
Reacting to the tragic incident, Atiku said, “It is with deep sadness that I learned of the devastating earthquake that struck the heart of Morocco.
“The tragic loss of over 2000 lives and the immense damage to heritage sites like the city’s historic walls is a sobering reminder of nature’s unpredictability.
“My heart goes out to the bereaved families, the government, and the people of Morocco during this challenging time.
“I stand in solidarity with you and hope the global community comes together to assist in the rebuilding efforts.
“Let’s keep Morocco and its people in our thoughts and prayers.”
This is just as the Royal Palace declared three days of mourning following the devastating occurrence.
Flags will be flown at half-staff on all public buildings, the palace said in a statement.
