Spanish Midfielder Cesc Fabregas has pointed the finger at the lack of goals as the reason Chelsea have had an underwhelming season.
The London outfit who are also defending Champions are looking at playing in the Europa League next season as they sit 5th on the Premier league table behind London rivals Tottenham Hotspurs.
Chelsea conceded 33 goals in 38 League matches last term, at a average of 0.87 per game. And while their defensive record has remained fairly similar this season — 34 conceded in 36 so far (0.94 per game) — it’s their attack that has left a lot to be desired.
While Chelsea last season averaged 2.24 goals per game, this season that number has dropped to just 1.69 per game.
Many will point at the departure of hitman Diego Costa, who left in rather acrimonious circumstances and while he was replaced by Alvaro Morata, the Spanish striker has been unable to replicate his form for Juventus and Real Madrid at Chelsea.
Speaking on the issue, Fabregas spoke to Sky Sports saying; “We are taking more chances because we are winning, and that’s the most important [thing].
“I think defensively as well, we have been keeping clean-sheets.
“But the biggest regret this season, it’s been up front, not taking our chances. We have had many, many chances to score in games, to win games that we didn’t win.
“We could have won more if we had been more clinical and that’s been our weakest point this season.”
