There was some mild drama in the Ondo state House of Assembly on Wednesday morning as a couple of lawmakers were reported to have traded blows over differing opinions on the Tuesday impeachment of the former Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, Hon. Iroju Ogundeji.
According to the Nigerian Tribune, Lawmakers, as usual, sat down to discuss the impeachment while preparing for a parliamentary meeting before the plenary and from the discussions, a huge argument spewed over and became a raging storm.
According to reports, things got so bad that one of the lawmakers allegedly took a swing– physically, at the impeached Deputy Speaker in the process.
It was initially unclear what had led to such an aggressive act, but it was gathered that the cause of the fracas had been the orders laid down by the Governor of the state, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu, who had tried to exert some influence and had requested that the House of Assembly reconsider their decision to impeach the deputy speaker. This apparently hadn’t gone down well with some people and most of the lawmakers were unwavering, saying that the decision could not be set aside.
According to reports, the members of the Assembly had sternly warned the Speaker of the House, Rt Hon Bamidele Oleyelogun, not to attempt to rescind the impeachment decision as such an act could result in the impeachment of the Speaker himself.
