Mikel Obi Officially Changes Name, Causing Confusion

1 Min Read

Nigerian and Chelsea FC midfielder John Mikel Obi has officially changed his name to the confusion of fans in England.

While many Nigerians are well versed as to the origins of his name, many foreigners never knew anything was wrong.

Mikel was actually born  John Michael Nchekwube Obinna and only became Mikel due to a mistake from the then NFA who sent it in as Mikel prior to the 2003 FIFA U-17 World Cup.

He kept it and was okay with being called John Mikel Obi by everyone even though technically he was wrong.

He has now had his name officially changed from  John Michael Nchekwube Obinna to Mikel John Obi.

It has caused confusion with England’s Daily Mirror writing an article as to how they didn’t get it.

Mikel is with the Chelsea team on their pre-season tour which continues with a game against Milan in the ICC tournament tomorrow.
