Jose Mourinho may have to rethink his midfield selection for Wednesday’s Champion’s league clash against Basle after Mikel had treatment on a knee injury on Monday.
Mikel is a major doubt for tomorrow’s game; he did train with the team this morning with heavy strapping and support tape down the back of his right knee.
Ramires is serving a suspension for the opening group game following Jonas Erikkson’s controversial decision to issue him a red card during the European Super Cup against Bayern Munich last month.
Mikel is currently undergoing intensive treatment on the injury as Mourinho consider his options ahead of the game.
Chelsea are not short of midfield options to fill in the void with players like Van Ginkel, Michael Essien, Frank Lampard and even David Luiz available if needed.
David Luiz was criticised for his role in Steven Naismith’s winner at GoodisonPark, former Liverpool Captain Jamie Redknapp described Luiz as one of the best ball-playing central defenders in the world but also said he lacks positional sense.
Mourinho is also expected to recall Gary Cahill to the Chelsea starting line-up after the decision to rest him for the game on Saturday.
Basel were beaten 3-1 by Chelsea in the last season’s Europa League semi-final at Stamford Bridge and Mourinho will expect a similar performance.
