Mexico to move 86-year-old drug lord from prison to house arrest

Interior Minister Miguel Chong on Thursday said an 86-year-old Mexican drug lord will be moved from prison to serve the remainder of his 40-year sentence under house arrest.

“Ernesto Carrillo’s transfer is imminent after federal prosecutors lost their appeal to keep him in prison.

“By order of a judge, we have been instructed to liberate him to serve the rest of his sentence at home,’’ Chong told newsmen.

A court has ruled that Fonseca, who was imprisoned in 1985 for his involvement in the torture and death of a U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency agent, should be allowed to serve the remaining nine years of his sentence at home.

Fonseca, along with drug lords Rafael Quintero and Miguel Gallardo, led the now-defunct Guadalajara cartel, which dominated Mexico’s drug trade in the 1970s and 80s. (Xinhua/NAN)
