Messi sets new record with Argentina

1 Min Read

Lionel Messi has set the record as Argentina’s most-capped player, achieving the feat in the Albiceleste’s 4-1 wallowing of Bolivia at the ongoing Copa America on Monday.

Messi, 34, has now been capped 148 times by his country, scoring 75 goals along the way.

He surpassed the 147 caps achieved by his former Barcelona teammate and friend, Javier Mascherano.

Before Mascherano, the record for the most caps in an Argentine shirt was held by former Inter Milan captain, Javier Zanetti, who featured 143 times for his nation.

Messi’s goal 75 tally is also the most by any player for Argentina, with Gabriel Batistuta coming second on 54 goals.

Messi’s friend and now Barcelona teammate, Sergio Aguero is third with 42. He also achieved his 100th cap for his country against Bolivia.
