Lionel Messi has confirmed his desire to play for his boyhood club Newell’s Old Boys before retiring.
Messi spent six years at the Argentine club before joining Barcelona at the age of 13, but speaking to Telefe’s Polemica en el Bar he reaffirmed his desire to return before retirement.
“I would love to,” said the 29-year-old when asked if he would consider a return to the club.
“It is something I have always kept my eye on as it was my dream (to play for the club) as a child.
“My life started to change and I have no regrets that I moved on, but I would love to return to play in Argentina and to play for Newell’s, where I grew up.”
Last month, Newell’s vice president Christian D’Amico stated that a future deal could materialise to bring the Barcelona forward back to the club.
