In the great football debate that will never get old, Manchester United legend, Wayne Rooney has picked his ‘best player’ between Juventus star, Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona ace, Lionel Messi.
Rooney played with Ronaldo during his time at Old Trafford, but has now chosen Messi as his greatest ever footballer on the planet earth.
The D.C. United striker showed no hesitation in proclaiming the Argentine captain better than former team-mate, Ronaldo.
Rooney, who famously played against Ronaldo at the Euro 2004 and the 2006 World Cup, has now lauded Messi, insisting he is the best player in history.
Appearing on the ‘Pardon My Take’ podcast, Rooney was asked which player he preferred and instantly replied: “Messi”.
Asked why he selected the Barca number 10, he added: “Yeah, I think I’ve said this before, but they’re both probably the best two players to ever play the game.
“I just think Messi is, in my eyes, the greatest ever.”
Messi and Ronaldo struggled to consistently replicate their brilliant club form at the just concluded 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
Messi scored only one goal during the competition against Nigeria and were subsequently knocked out by eventual champions, France, while Ronaldo scored a hat-trick in his opening game against Spain and then the winner against Morocco, but his influence waned as Portugal were eliminated by Uruguay in the last 16.
Both super stars have shown incredibly remarkable consistency in their careers, with both winning the last 10 editions of the Balon d’or whilst breaking numerous records.
The rivalry continues As Ronaldo recently completed a transfer to juventus while Messi remains at Barcelona.
