Seek Medical Help for Hermaphrodite Children, Activist Urges Parents

2 Min Read

The National President, Foundation for the protection of women and children in Nigeria, Hajiya Ramatu Tijjani has urged parents of hermaphrodite children to seek medical help for their children instead of hiding their condition.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a hermaphrodite is a person born with both male and female sexual organs.

Tijjani, who gave the advice in an interview with NAN in Kaduna on Monday, also cautioned against stigmatizing such children.

She noted that though the condition was rare, such children are facing many challenges in schools and from members of the society,  which violates their fundamental right.

“At times, some parents do usually hide them because of their nature and do not allow them to play with other kids in order to keep their secret.

“Parents and guardians should be educated to take their children for medical diagnosis at the early stage when they discovered that their children are hermaphrodites instead of hiding them.
“Schools can also help to reduce stigma and discrimination against such children by creating a safer and more supportive environment, preventing bullying and harassment.
“The schools should also engage with parents toward tackling all forms of harassment to the kids.”
