Chief Medical Director of Federal Government’s Irrua Specialist and Teaching Hospital, ISTH, Irrua, Edo State, Dr. Sylvanus Okogbenin, has said that 145 per 1000 Nigerian women die daily from complications of childbirth.
Okogbenin while speaking at the 2015 Annual General Meeting, AGM, and Scientific Conference of the Medical Women Association of Nigeria, MWAN, hosted by ISTH, pointed out that men should be allowed to also make decisions concerning a woman’s reproductive health.
He noted that several efforts to curb maternal mortality does not taken socio-cultural factors and gender dynamics into consideration.
He also added that although Nigeria contributes less than 10 percent of the world population, Nigeria contributes 10 per cent of maternal mortality stats.
