A one-storey building undergoing construction in the Lekki area of Lagos has collapsed on Tuesday, trapping an unconfirmed number of people underneath it.
The building located at Ajiran-Ikate area of Ibeju Lekki Local Government Area was said to have trapped workers, mostly menial labourers and foodsellers, two of whom were said to have been rushed to a nearby hospital after being rescued from the rubble hours after the collapse.
Ibrahim Farinloye, the Public Relations Officer of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in the South-West Region, who confirmed the incident, said only two persons have been rescued from the site of the collapsed building.
Eyewitnesses say the voices of some of those trapped under the collapsed building could be heard calling for help.
A woman who identified herself as Olori Ajikan speaking to Daily Trust said “Many of them are calling for help while informing the public that they were still alive.”
