2 Min Read

Students and staff of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University in Bauchi have been sent into panic mood after a bridge within the university community collapsed and killed some pedestrians.

The incident is said to have occurred as a result of a heavy rainfall which continued for many hours in the state on Monday, August 5, 2019.

Although the total number of casualties recorded is yet to be ascertained, two lifeless bodies have been washed ashore.

Speaking with newsmen on the incident, a source stated, “I learned that eight students have been killed, many others are missing. One corpse was found around the Nigerian Air force Base (over 5 kilometres away), many are still missing.”

Another student of the university, who narrated the story via his Facebook page, wrote, “We learnt that there was a sudden disaster which happened at ATBU, Gubi Campus, which affected many of our students, and there might be loss of lives. Please let’s pray for them, and anyone with relatives, brothers, sisters should make an enquiry about his or her well-being”.

The school authorities have since reacted to the news, reiterating that members of the public will be briefed at the end of the meeting scheduled to discuss the incident.

Its spokesperson, Dr. Andee Iheme, said, “An emergency Senate Meeting has been called this morning and we will hold a Press Conference immediately after that.”
