PDP’s Board Of Trustees Makes U-Turn, Backs Sheriff As Party Chair

Governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have said the simmering crisis over the appointment of Senator Modu Ali Sheriff as the party chairman has been resolved.
Sheriff, a former governor of Borno State, was elected by the National Executive Committe of the PDP to replace Ahmed Adamu Muazu who resigned in May last year.

The Board of Trustee (BOT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday said it had to make a  u-turn on its decision not to support Ali Modu Sheriff as the National Chairman of the party so as to further destroy the unity, cohesion and future successes of the party.

However, the  board said that Sheriff and all current members of the National Working Committee (NWC) must vacate their positions to give way to new leadership within the three months.

In a communique issued after a meeting on Thursday February 25th; and signed by the former Deputy Senate of the President, Sen. Ibrahim Mantu, the Board reaffirmed its full confidence in its acting Chairman, Sen. Walid Jibrin.

Stating: “The BOT reviewed the commitment made on its behalf at the stakeholders’ meeting which was convened by Deputy President of the Senate, Senator lke Ekweremadu, which resolved that Senator Ali Modu Sheriff who was elected by NEC at its last meeting be allowed three months’ tenure within which period congresses and national convention will hold to elect new leaders of the party at all levels.”

Members of the BoT and other stakeholders have maintained that with him at the helm of affairs, the PDP would face serious legitimacy crisis; due to the widespread ut unsubstantiated belief that Sheriff is a sponsor of Boko Haram.
