Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City are English Champions after Manchester United suffered a shock defeat to relegation bound West Brom at Old Trafford today.
It was inevitable, but a United win would have at least delayed City’s win till next week. The blue side of Manchester ran out winners against Tottenham yesterday meaning they needed one more win or a United loss to lift the Premier League trophy.
The United loss seemed unlikely, so most presumed that City would be crowned Champions next week.
But a Jay Rodriguez goal meant that bottom club West Brom gave Manchester City a parting gift and gave them the title a week early.
West Brom’s win meant that Guardiola’s men now hold a 16-point lead at the top of the table, with five fixtures to go. What this means, in essence, is that even if City were to lose their next 5 games, they would still win the league.
City had been dominant all through the season taking top spot early on and not relinquishing it all season long.
Over the course of the 33 games played so far, City’s record reads thus: 28 wins, 3 draws and just 2 defeats.
United had spoilt the party last week coming from behind to beat City 3-2, but they were unable to continue their impressive run.
This would be Guardiola’s second trophy of the season after winning the EFL Cup earlier this season
Our Time. Our City.
