An American man, Davis Andahl, has been elected into the state legislature in the US state of North Dakota, nearly a month after his death.
The 55-year-old died of COVID-19 complicatiions on October 5 after winning a keenly-contested primary.
The Republican candidate’s demise had left state authorites perplexed as to how to proceed, as there was no precedent on dealing with the death of a candidate so close to an election.
However, the North Dakota Attorney-General offered a legal opinion stating that should Andahl win, his party would be responsible for filling the vacant seat until a special election.
A man of many parts, the deceased was described as a cattle rancher and land developer, as well as a racecar driver and instructor,

He served 16 years serving on the zoning and planning commission in Burleigh County, including eight years as its chair, and was so passionate about his state and popular that he was called “Dakota Dave.”
The Washington Post reported that Andahl was one of at least six dead candidates since 2000 to have won elections at nearly every level of government, from mayoral races in small-town Tennessee to a US senate seat.
