Former Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic has officially announced his decision to quit the beautiful game after a string of injuries over the last couple of years reduced his otherwise blistering career to fits and starts.
The 34-year-old Serbian arrived at the decision following the decision of the Italian side, Inter Milan to cancel his contract.
Nemanja Vidic was an integral part of the United squad between January 2006 and May 2014, during which he won five Premier League titles, three League Cups, the Champions League, and the Club World Cup before he moved to Inter.
Hernia and back injuries however prevented him from replicating his United form at the club, where he was only able to make 28 appearances.
In a statement on the United website, Nemanja Vidic said: “The time has come for me to hang up my boots.
“The injuries I have had in the last few years have taken their toll.
“I would like to thank all the players I have played with, all the managers and staff I have worked with, and say a big ‘thank you’ to the fans for their support over the years.”
Responding, the club management released a statement which read: “Everyone at United would like to thank Nemanja Vidic again for his eight years of service to the club and to wish him all the best for his retirement.”
