Man United draw Liverpool to maintain EPL top spot

2 Min Read

Manchester United held Liverpool to a drab draw on Sunday evening to maintain the top spot in the English Premier League (EPL) table.

The Old Trafford side managed to keep Liverpool’s fearsome trio of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino mostly quiet for the duration of the game, although Firmino eventually gave way for Divock Origi in the 85th minute.

On the other hand, United squandered three chances to snatch a statement victory at Anfield through Bruno Fernandes, and, later on, Paul Pogba.

Fernandes had a superb 20-yard free-kick curled inches wide, and almost compensated for his earlier miss shortly into the second half but had another effort barely saved by the outstretched leg of Liverpool’s goalkeeper Alisson.

Pogba on the other hand had perhaps the best chance to snatch victory for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side but his point-blank shot was clumsily saved again by Alisson, who was by far the busier of the two goalkeepers.

United’s goalkeeper David de Gea was however called into action to stop Thiago Alcantara’s incredible longe-range effort.

The draw secured United’s top spot placing, with two points above second-place Leicester, who secured a convincing 2-0 victory over Southampton on Saturday.

Liverpool are in third place, just one point below former manager, Brendan Rodger’s Leicester side.
