Man Sentenced To 2 Years Imprisonment For Drug Trafficking

A Federal High Court in Lagos, on Wednesday sentenced a 27 year-old man, Sani Ibrahim, to two years in the correctional centre, over drug trafficking.

The defendant was arraigned before Justice Nicholas Oweibo, on a one-count charge bordering on trafficking of Cannabis (Hemp).

Ibrahim pleaded guilty to the charge.

Reviewing the facts of the case after his plea, the Prosecutor, Mr Jeremiah Aernan, tendered some documents including: A written statement of the defendant, a drug analysis form, a request for scientific aid form as well as remnant of the narcotics.

The court admitted the evidences and marked them accordingly.

Aernan said that the defendant committed the offences on Aug. 8.

He said Ibrahim was arrested on a tip-off at the Lekki area of Lagos for engaging in unlawful deal on Cannabis weighing 3.1kg.

According to the prosecution, Cannabis is classified in the NDLEA schedule as banned substances similar to Cocaine and Heroine LSD, and which is prohibited by law.

According to the prosecutor, the offence contravene the provisions of Section 11(c) of the NDLEA Act, Cap N30, Laws of the Federation 2004.

Aernan urged the court to convict and sentence the defendant based on his plea as well as evidences adduced by prosecution.

Delivering judgement, Justice Oweibo, found the defendant guilty of the offence as charged and accordingly convicted him.

He, consequently, sentenced him to a term of two years imprisonment beginning from the date of his arrest. (NAN)
