An unidentified man has made himself $17,000 (N3,387,420) richer by finding a hardened chunk of whale vomit along Angelesey Beach in North Wales.
According to News Week, the 2.4-pound object is highly desired by perfumers because it contains a substance known as ambergris.
Ambergris is a wax-like substance that originates as a secretion in the intestines of the sperm whale, found floating in tropical seas and used in perfume manufacture.
Ambergris is a much-coveted substance in the perfume-making industry because it enables scents stay much longer on the human body, and has been used by prominent perfume making companies including Chanel, Newsweek reported.
This is not the first time such will be found, as an 8-year-old boy was said to have found a huge chunk of ambergris in England in 2012 which was later sold for $63,000 (N12,553,380).
Ambergris, according to experts, is only produced by sperm whales and can be found in the Atlantic Ocean and on the coasts of South Africa, Brazil, Madagascar, the East Indies, The Maldives, China, Japan, India, Australia, New Zealand, and the Molucca Islands, and in other places on rare occasions.
So next time you go to the beach and you use a substance you don’t understand, ask questions. You may be looking at millions without realising it.
