The timely intervention of police saved a 53-year-old man from being lynched by an irate mob after he was caught having sexual intercourse with his eldest son’s wife.
The Ugandan man, Hassan Chelimo, reportedly became entangled in a love affair with his son’s wife, Asula Chellangati, when his son, Martin Mutai, was away from home.
Mutai is said to have gone to South Sudan to seek employment and stayed away from home for long periods.
On the fateful day, community people in Kapkwata village had stumbled on Chelimo and his son’s wife in the act and descended on him heavily.
The villagers roughed up, clobbered and would have lynched him, a police spokesman said.
Sipi region police spokesperson, Rogers Taitika, who confirmed the incident, said the police prevented the mob from carrying out jungle justice on the suspect.
He said the police acted on a tip-off and promptly intervened in the incident.
Chelimo reportedly told police that his son’s wife lured him into the act by sending romantic messages like “good night sweetheart”.
He has been arrested pending conclusion of investigations.
