Embattled Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has promised to win the UEFA Champions League trophy for the team in the nearest future.
Speaking on Saturday after his team’s 4-1 bashing at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur, he said he was confident that the much-elusive trophy will be theirs soon.
Manchester City suffered two straight defeats at the hands of West Ham and Tottenham Hotspur in the Barclays Premier League to end a fine run of form that saw the team win all its initial five matches to garner all 15 points on offer.
The team now sits in second place on the league table, 1 point behind leaders and city rivals, Manchester United.
The huge amount that has been expended on bolstering the team notwithstanding, last year’s UCL runners up, Juventus still managed to secure a win over the star-studded City team, despite the Old Lady’s poor domestic form.
Pellegrini is not perturbed however as he said, “I am sure that Manchester City will win the Champions League in the future because the whole club works well.
“We are younger than the teams who normally win the Champions League over the last 10 years. Our team has only arrived in the last few years and we are improving every season.”
The Chilean went up to back up his claim by citing an example of former Manchester United’s legendary gaffer, Sir Alex Ferguson who was only able to win the UCL twice despite a very illustrious 27-year reign at the club.
“Being champions of Europe must not be an obsession here. Manchester United, in the whole period of Alex Ferguson, when he was the best manager in the club’s history, only won the Champions League twice in 27 years,” he quipped.
