Man City, NFF at War Over Iheanacho

2 Min Read

Kelechi Iheanacho and Chidiebere Nwakali will miss this year’s Africa U-20 Championship.

The two players, currently on the books of Barclays English Premier League club, Manchester City will miss the competition for different reasons.

Iheanacho is currently injured while Nwakali is poised to seal a loan deal with an unnamed European club and will be unavailable to the national team until further notice, according to City.

The two players were among nine overseas-based pros called up by the Flying Eagles for the tournament which will get underway on March 8.

City, through recruitment operations manager, Fergal Harkin explained the clubs stand in a correspondence to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

“With regards Kelechi Iheanacho, he is currently injured. We believe he will be fit around the middle of March but can keep in contract regarding his recovery.

“For Chidiebere Nwakali, we are currently in the process of agreeing his loan deal to Europe and he will not be available to meet up with the national team until further notice.

“At this moment in time, we feel it is best for his development that he cements his place in the club side,” the letter signed by Fergal read.

Nigeria is in Group A of the championship alongside Congo, the Ivory Coast and hosts, Senegal.
