An Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Friday ordered the remand of a 40-year-old man, John Ikeji, in prison for allegedly defiling a six-year-old girl.
Magistrate Olufunke Sule-Amzat, who did not take the plea of the defendant, ordered that the defendant be remanded in Kirikiri Prison.
Sule-Amzat ordered that the case file should be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.
The defendant, who resides at Ijegun area of Satellite Town, Lagos, is facing a charge of defilement.
Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, ASP. Benson Emuerhi, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on May 5, at Satellite Town.
Emuerhi alleged that the defendant unlawfully defiled the girl by forcefully having sexual intercourse with her.

He said the defendant was apprehended by the police and the case was referred to the Gender Section at Ikeja Police Command for further investigation.
Emuerhi said that the offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 137 prescribes 14 years imprisonment for defilement.
Sule-Amzat adjourned the case until July 7. (NAN)
