Luis Suarez has revealed he’s unable to shed any light on why he wasn’t nominated for the Ballon d’or because he’s never understood how it works.
The former Liverpool striker said he was astonished to not make the 23-man list but conceded that his biting ban did not help his cause.
Speaking before Uruguay’s match with Costa Rica on Thursday, he said: ‘Everyone can draw their own conclusions. I’ve never understood the Ballon d’Or, not only now but in recent years, what the qualification is, whether it’s from July to June or January to December I don’t know when they make it.
‘It looks like they did after July and they considered the World Cup too but I prefer to keep quiet than say anything more, maybe they will suspend me.’
Suarez scored 31 goals in the Barclays Premier League, was crowned both the PFA and Football Writers’ Player of the Year, and came within a whisker of leading Liverpool to the title.
Five Barclays Premier League players and one Briton- Gareth Bale- have been named on FIFA’s 23-man shorlist for the 2014 Ballon d’Or.
Current holder Cristiano Ronaldo and four-time winner Lionel Messi are once again the favourites to claim the award this year.
