The incident was captured by a surveillance video located in that area and the Exclusive video which was obtained by NBC New York shows a white van plough right into the front of the Legacy Africana Market on Bay Street just before 11 p.m. Sunday. The driver was identified as 42-year-old Anthony Imafidon.

After the crash, Anthony got out of the car, he then opened the two back doors and a ball of flame came gushing out. The fire burnt everything around it, the van included and also a light pole which was situated nearby.

Luckily, his ex-wife and children, a 15-year-old girl, a 13-year-old boy and an 11-year-old boy and other people inside the building were not hurt.  When asked the reason for carrying out the horrible act, he could not give a good reason. Information regarding an attorney for Imafidon was not immediately available.

Anthony is a first-class degree holder in Economics from Bayero University, Kano and a second degree in Psychology from Staten Island College.  After the incident, he was rushed to Richmond University Medical Center and was later released to the police. Anthony, who is the owner of Pride African and Caribbean Store on Staten Island, has been charged with attempted murder, attempted assault, criminal mischief, arson, reckless endangerment and child endangerment. An “incendiary device” was used in the fire, according to police, but no other details were provided. The charred building was badly damaged and blocked off by officials but it was later determined that the damage didn’t affect its structure.
