The goalless draw means that Liverpool now end the calendar year with a 3 point margin over second-placed Manchester United.
Liverpool coach, Jurgen Klopp, was without defenders, Joel Matip Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez for the EPL clash at St. James Park.
The World’s Best Coach therefore opted for youngster, Nathaniel Phillips.
A double strike by Newcastle forward, Callum Wilson, within the first 12 minutes, marked a great start by the Magpies.

Liverpool had keeper, Alisson Becker, to thank for not going behind early on.
The Reds did miss a good chance after forward, Mo Salah, fluffed his lines on the 11th minute mark.
Newcastle goalie, Karl Darlow, denied Roberto Firmino just before halftime.
Darlow rescued the points again at the end of the game with a fine save.
Liverpool now have 33 points after 16 games.
