Liverpool and Chelsea’s Perfect Starts Makes Premier League History

LONDON, ENGLAND - SEPTEMBER 16: Willian of Chelsea is congratulated by Gary Cahill and Ruben Loftus-Cheek of Chelsea on scoring the opening goal during the UEFA Chanmpions League group G match between Chelsea and Maccabi Tel-Aviv FC at Stamford Bridge on September 16, 2015 in London, United Kingdom. Chelsea continued their impressive winning streak after overcoming Cardiff 4-1 to continue their perfect start under Maurizio Sarri.

Liverpool did the same, overcoming Tottenham Hotspurs 2-1 to also continue with a perfect start to the campaign.

They are the only 2 clubs that have 15 points out of 15 with the other contented such as Manchester City, Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester United all dropping points at some point or the other.

The only other club that could have joined them, Watford, were beaten by United and therefore had to halt their winning streak at 4.

This achievement is a historical one with this being the first time in Premier League history that 2 clubs have won five games on the bounce at the beginning of the season.

While one team achieving it is remarkable, it’s not uncommon (Chelsea have done it 4 times), however, two  teams achieving the feat makes it the first time in the Premier League era that it has been done.

This is not to say that before the Premier League era it was commonplace, as this feat hasn’t been achieved since the 1908-09 season, which was over a 100 years ago.

The two clubs will be taking on European opposition this week with Liverpool taking on PSG in the Champions League while Chelsea will be in action in the Europa League against PAOK.
