Argentina captain Lionel Messi opened his goal account for 2025 in the early hours of Thursday morning (Nigerian time), netting the decisive strike in Inter Miami’s 1-0 victory over Kansas City in the Concacaf Champions Cup first-leg tie.

The highly anticipated match took place at Children’s Mercy Park, where Messi’s 56th-minute goal secured a crucial advantage for his team ahead of the return leg. The second leg is scheduled for Wednesday, February 26, at Chase Stadium.

With this latest goal, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has now recorded an impressive 851 career goals. Messi will now look to build on this performance when Inter Miami faces New York City in their upcoming MLS fixture on Sunday.
