Former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu said he was not sure personnel of the Nigerian Army carried out Tuesday night’s shooting of unarmed protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate.
He spoke in an interview with Channels Television few hours after the shooting.
Tinubu, who is the National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), said he smelt a conspiracy concerning the shooting.
Asked if he harboured any conspiracy ttheory about the incident, the ex-governor said, “Yes, I do. I’m not sure they are Nigerian Army; I’m not sure yet.
“You see all these ragtag uniforms all the country. I’m not sure how well the uniforms of the army are controlled but that’s not as difficult as the bloodshed that has occurred.”
Furthermore, he said even if it were Army personnel, the use of live ammunition on innocent protesters was “troubling” and wrong.
According to him, the soldiers could have used better alternatives such as teargas, pepper spray or rubber bullets.
Responding on whether President Muhammadu Buhari ordered the shooting, Tinubu said, “I don’t believe that the president could have given such order.”
However, he criticised the government for not being proactive in nipping the EndSARS protests that culminated in the shooting in the bud.
He accused the government of being slow in fishing out operatives of the now-defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) whose brutality and killing of innocent civilians created the protest in the first place.
