Leah Sharibu’s Mum Sues Buhari, Police IG, Demands N500m Damages

Rebecca, the mother of abducted Dapchi girl Leah Sharibu, has filed an action at the Federal High Court in Lagos against President Muhammadu Buhari, Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris and Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN).

In the suit dated September 19 , 2018, with no FCH/ L/cs/ 1528/ 18, and jointly filed with David Kadzai and a United States – based NGO, Lift – Up – Now Incorporation , the distraught mother is claiming N500 million in damages for the continued detention of her daughter by Boko Haram.

The Herald recalls that Leah Sharibu was one of 110 girls abducted from the Government Girls Science and Technical College, Dapchi, Yobe State on February 19, 2018 and is the only one of the girls still being held by the terror group on account of her Christian faith.

In the suit, the plaintiffs are demanding the cash sum as compensation for the indignities and human deprivations suffered by Leah since her abduction seven months ago.

The defendants were sued over their failure to ensure the release of 15-year-old Leah and for failing in their statutory responsibilities.

According to court documents, the plaintiffs are seeking an order of the court to direct and mandate the defendants to secure the immediate and unconditional release of Leah from her abductors.

Also the plaintiffs are seeking an order of the court compelling the defendants to employ every means in securing the abducted girl’s release.
