Lawmakers urge Gov. Obiano to publish abolished taxes, levies, fees in Anambra

2 Min Read

The Anambra State House of Assembly has urged Gov. Willie Obiano to direct the commissioners for finance, education and the chairman of the board of internal revenue to publish government’s approved fees in the state.

The lawmakers made the request during a plenary session on Friday in Awka based on the motion moved by Mr Kingsley Iruba (APGA-Nnewi South 1).

The lawmakers said there was a need for the affected bodies to publish and submit to the assembly the list of all the legal taxes, levies and fees in the state.

Iruba said he observed in a special broadcast by the governor that he had scrapped the collection of some levies, taxes and fees to cushion the effects of the recession on the people of the state.

He said that the list of the scrapped fees was not clear to the people or the lawmakers.

He moved that such list be made public to monitor the development arising from their collection.

Supporting the motion, Mr Romanus Obi (APGA-Orumba North) said the publication of the taxes, levies and fees would help the people as well as companies know the approved ones.

After much debate, the Speaker of the assembly, Mrs Rita Maduagwu, noted that the publication of the abolished ones would guide the people accordingly.

Maduagwu ruled that the governor should direct the concerned bodies to submit the list for the assembly to have first-hand information of what was expected of the people. (NAN)
