Law School Graduate Denied Access To Her Bar Ceremony For Refusing To Remove Hijab

2 Min Read

Amasa Firdaus, a Muslim law school graduate was denied access to her call to Bar ceremony earlier this week for refusal to wear a wig over her wig.

In a statement to Premium Times, she stated: “There is nothing like that (laws preventing the use of Hijab), When you ask them too, they tell you it is convention; that that is how it is done and it has to remain like that.”

Her sister Tawakalitu Amasa, riled Nigerians of not only Muslim heritage but all religions to support the cause. She says there is nothing illegal about what her sister has done, “All we are clamouring for is to allow hijab in the legal profession because it is our right.”

This case has garnered a lot of attention online and on social media. Amasa when asked if she knew the consequences of her actions replied “I knew that was what was going to happen,” but in her words, she wants to change the narrative and give Muslim sisters the rights to express their constitutional rights as enshrined in the constitution. “My major concern is the approval of Hijab so that every person coming behind me will be able to use it for the call to bar.”

Reactions from the law school have not been forthcoming.
