Latest AFCON 2023 News Update For Today

Good morning Nigeria, welcome to The Herald Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) news headlines for today, Sunday, 4th, February 2024.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has attributed the Super Eagles’ recent triumph in the AFCON quarterfinal to President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

NFF President Ibrahim Gusau expressed gratitude to Tinubu for his support and promised that the team would secure the trophy for the President.

Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abidjan on Saturday, Gusau said that Tinubu’s motivational words to the team were a driving force behind their 1-0 victory over Angola.

The Herald reported that Ademola Lookman’s goal, assisted by Moses Simon, secured the Eagles’ place in the semi-final.

“You heard what he said. He said, ‘Boys go there, believe in me. You don’t have any problem, and whatever issues you are facing, just believe in me. Go and do the job, and you’ll see the result.’ That’s exactly what he told them; you can see them doing the job,” Gusau said.

An Ademola Lookman lone goal was all the Super Eagles of Nigeria needed to nip the Palancas Negras of Angola and qualify for the semi-finals of the ongoing 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Lookman volleyed home from close range from a Moses Simon pass in the 41st minute of the encounter at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium.

It was the Atalanta forward’s third goal for the Super Eagles in the ongoing competition.

Atalanta and Nigerian forward, Ademola Lookman doesn’t see Angola being enough to stop the Super Eagles from progressing to the next stage of the 2023 AFCON.

At 6 p.m today, February 2, Ademola Lookman and his teammates will face Angola in the quarter-final stage of the 2023 AFCON.

A win for the Super Eagles today will make it the fourth time Nigeria has defeated Angola in 9 games.

Although Palancas Negras are seen as minnows in African football as they are yet to go beyond the quarter-final stage of AFCON, the side has had a fair record against Nigeria. They have defeated the Super Eagles twice in eight meetings.

Super Eagle’s Ademola Lookman has sent Camaeroon out of the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) game.

The Herald reports that Ademola Lookman scored twice in each half to hand Nigeria a famous win over the Indomitable Lions.

Victor Osimhen broke free and laid off a pass to Lookman, who saw his weak finish trickle pass the line.

With time running out, Lookman touched home Calvin Bassey’s cross.

The 2023 presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has encouraged the Super Eagles of Nigeria to double their efforts to ensure they beat Cameroon in the Round of 16 at the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023.

Obi made the call in an X post on Saturday, hours before Nigeria’s clash with the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Cote d’Ivoire.

The former Anambra governor said that Nigeria remained a nation of winners despite present difficulties confronting the nation.

Obi said, “I congratulate our dear Super Eagles for their efforts in the ongoing African Cup of Nations and for scaling through the group stage.

“As they go into the knock-out stage today, with a match against our friendly neighbour, Cameroon, I encourage them to double their efforts, while wishing them, and by extension our dear nation, Nigeria, a resounding victory.

Matches have been concluded in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) group stage with 16 teams emerging for the knockout stage, The Herald report.

There were so many shocking exits in the group stage which saw underdogs making into the knockout stage and some heavyweights being kicked out of the competition.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have advanced to the round of 16 of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after defeating Guinea-Bissau 1-0 in their final group game on Monday evening.

Nigeria began their campaign with a 1-1 draw with Equatorial Guinea before securing a 1-0 win over hosts Côte d’Ivoire.

Monday’s slim victory over Guinea-Bissau sealed a second-place finish in Group A for the Jose Peseiro’s team, who will now face the runners-up of Group C.

In a highly-contested game, the Eagles came out as winners, thanks to an own goal by Opa Sanganté in the 36th minute of the encounter.

Guinea-Bissau young talent, Carlos Mane has expressed concerns over his country home’s African Cup of Nations (AFCON) match against the Super Eagles of Nigeria on Monday (today).

The Herald reports that Guinea-Bissau is in the bottom place with zero points in the same Group A, where they are paired with Equatorial Guinea, Nigeria and AFCON host, Ivory Coast.

Under the leadership of Baciro Cande, the team has had a disappointing start to the 2023 AFCON tournament, suffering defeats in their first two matches against Cote d’Ivoire and Equatorial Guinea.

In order to have any chance of advancing to the Round of 16, they must emerge victorious against the formidable Super Eagles.
