Lamborghini has finally formally confirmed that the Urus crossover will move from concept to reality in 2017—one hopes with a new name—ending a year of executives saying that it really, most likely, probably, almost definitely would be approved by upper management at VW. The news was announced by none other than Rupert Stadler, the CEO of Lamborghini’s corporate parent Audi, at a Lamborghini event this past weekend.
That the Urus undoubtedly would be headed to production in 2017 was less of an open secret than a public broadcast with a disclaimer at the end, with Lamborghini boss Stephan Winkelmann and his cohorts lobbying heavily for the Urus within the company. It’ll be part of a push to add volume to Lamborghini, who, despite greater visibility the past few years, is still handily outsold by Ferrari around the world.
