Lagos CP removes Okokomaiko DPO over N100k extortion

The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, CP Idowu Owohunwa, has ordered the immediate removal of the Okokomaiko Division Police Officer (DPO), SP Emmanuel Edebagha, after reports that some of his men extorted N101,000 from a mobile phone dealer.

In a tweet on Saturday, Lagos police spokesman, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said that the DPO was removed for “his lack of supervision of his men”.

A mobile phone dealer at the Alaba International Market, Lagos State who identified himself as Onyinyechi Esther Anwusi had lamented how some policemen forcefully extorted N101,000 from him.

The victim also shared the transaction receipt generated from his Access Bank mobile app.

The fund was sent to a PalmPay account with account name Ndueso Okon Archibong and account number 9550455342.

Sahara Reporters reported how the police officers accosted and searched the victim without a warrant, forced him to unlock his mobile phone, and went through its contents without finding anything incriminating.

“The officers thereafter forced him to write a statement under duress indicting himself as an internet fraudster popularly known “as a Yahoo Yahoo boy” and forcefully made him pay the sum of N100,000 for doing nothing,” the report stated.

Quoting the report on Twitter, Hundeyin said that the police commissioner has ordered the commencement of disciplinary action against the DPO and the officers involved.

“CP Idowu Owohunwa has ordered the immediate removal of DPO Okokomaiko for his lack of supervision of his men.

“CP Owohunwa has also ordered commencement of disciplinary action against him and all his indicted officers (who are already in the state headquarters),” Hundeyin tweeted.
