The senator representing Kaduna Central senatorial district in the National Assembly, Sen. Shehu Sani, has called for religious harmony to defeat those fanning the embers of division in the country.
He made this known in reaction to protests over an attack on a church in Benue by armed herdsmen which led to the death of two Catholic priests and 17 parishioners.
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) under Dr Sampson Olasupo Ayokunle had urged churches to engage in peaceful protests to protest the killings.
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo had also last week disclosed that Christians were being persecuted in the country.
But taking to his Twitter handle on Monday evening, Sani, a Muslim All Progressives Congress (APC) senator urged opinion leaders to condemn attacks on anyone irrespective of religion.
He added that this remained the only way to sustain a united Nigeria.
He said, “Killing of Christians by insurgents and Herdsmen is condemnable; Killing of Muslims by insurgents and Herdsmen is condemnable. Persecution of People for their faith or political beliefs whether Christians or Muslims is condemnable. A moral duty for all patriots and men and women of faith is to worship and let others worship and to unite and confront a common threat and a common danger, in order to preserve the republic.”
