Kenyan prosecutor on Wednesday charged a 28-year-old IT expert with hacking into the Revenue Authority and stealing almost 40 million dollars, local newspapers reported.
State prosecutor Edwin Okello accused Alex Mutuku of belonging to a syndicate of electronic fraudsters who steal money from various institutions and companies in the East African nation, according to newspaper The Standard.
“The information we have is just a tip of the iceberg, the racket is big and involves people outside the country,’’ Okello was quoted as saying.
Mutuku, who pleaded not guilty, allegedly hacked into the tax authority’s computer systems over the past 24 months.
The trial, which began Wednesday, is scheduled to continue on March 28. (dpa/NAN)
