Kenyan Police Arrests 2 for Poisoning 8 Lions

1 Min Read

Two herdsmen have been arrested in Kenya for allegedly poisoning eight lions in what is suspected to be a revenge attack after the lions reportedly killed three of their cows.

According to News24, the herdsmen were arrested by the officers of the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) in Narok County on Sunday.

The paper quoted the KWS, Narok County Senior Warden Collins Omondi as saying the arrested herdsmen were already helping police in their investigations.

The herders allegedly laced meat with poison and threw it to the lions to eat, which left eight of the lions dead.

Available information says that the herders had gone into the Maasai Mara game reserve located in Narok county to graze their flock when the lions pounced on the flock and killed three cows.

Omondi said, instead of applying for compensation as the law stipulates, they decided to take the law into their hands by poisoning the lions with the leftovers of the cows killed.

He said the herders will be arraigned in court after conclusion of investigation on charges of wildlife poisoning and illegal entry into the park, News24 reported.
