A man in Kenya who claims to be a doctor and runs a string of clinics in Nairobi has been arrested and charged to court for sexually assaulting his female patients.
The alleged doctor, Mugo wa Wairimu, was said to have taken to his heels when a video purportedly showing him raping a patient after sedating her was shown on national television.
The video was said to have caused public outcry, prompting a nation-wide manhunt that fished him out of hiding on Thursday in a Nairobi hotel.
After he was caught, Wairimu waved off the allegations against him as the handiwork of “enemies” who were out to get him.
When contacted by the BBC, the Kenya’s Medical Practitioners’ Board, the equivalent of the Nigeria Medical Association, denied he was their member.
When he was charged, he did not enter a plea but prosecutors asked that he be remanded in prison custody because of fears for his safety as a result of the public outrage the case generated, a reasoning Wairimu’s legal team did not oppose.
