Kemi Olunloyo’s Detention Shows Something Is Wrong With Our Judicial System – Seyi Law

Popular comedian, Seyi Law has condemned the detention of blogger and social media critic, Kemi Olunloyo for six months at the Port Harcourt Maximum Security Prison.

He said that the prolonged detention signified that the nation’s judicial system was faulty and should be reformed.

Olunloyo had last year accused Port Harcourt-based Pastor David Ibiyeomie of the Salvation Ministries of having an illicit affair with Nollywood actress, Iyabo Ojo. He strongly denied the allegation.

In March 2017, the blogger was arrested in Ibadan and transported to Port Harcourt, where she was charged for criminal defamation, and was subsequently detained. Pastor Ibiyeomie again denied any involvement in the blogger’s travails.

The blogger was recently at Ibiyeomie’s church, where she apologised for the embarrassment caused to the clergyman.

But speaking to The Punch, Seyi Law, who has also had a disagreement with the blogger, said, “No one is perfect, but if someone, who was not supposed to be detained for more than 48 hours, spent six months in prison, then, there is a problem. Whether the person is wrong or not, the judicial system is faulty. Everyone should be given the benefit of doubt, at least until you are proven guilty by the court. Nobody is above the law, but in a situation where you don’t follow the recommendation of the law, it is not only an offence to the person involved but to Nigerians as a whole.”

After her release from detention, Kemi Olunloyo, the daughter of former Oyo State Governor, Omololu Olunloyo, had appealed to Nigerians to contribute towards saving her failing health.

Seyi Law had responded to the call, donating all the funds in his daughter’s account to Olunloyo’s medical trust fund.

Recall that Olunloyo had earlier called Seyi Law’s daughter, Tiwa, obese and suffering from a health disorder, an observation which provoked a public disagreement between the blogger and the comedian.
