The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) will go after owners and operators of supermarkets and confectionery  selling cookies, biscuits and other products laced with illicit substances.

The National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kano State Command, said it impounded over 4,000 kilogrammes of illicit drugs from January to date.

The NDLEA state Commandant, Alhaji Hamza Umar disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Thursday.

Umar said that the drugs which were confiscated during the operations include Cannabis Sativa, cough syrup and cocaine, among other illicit substances.

He said that the command had also arrested and arraigned 159 suspects before the Federal High Court in Kano within the period under review.

He said out of the 159 arrested suspects, the command was able to secure conviction of 88 persons who were currently serving various jail terms.

“In January, we arrested 66 suspects and secured conviction of 25 out of them.

“Also in February, 47 suspects were arrested and 30 were convicted, while in March 46 arrest was made and 33 were convicted,” he said.

According to him, the command had also counselled and rehabilitated over 144 drug users within the period under review.

He attributed the success recorded by the command to the cooperation received from the members of the public.

Umar commended the state government and other stakeholders for the support they had been giving to the agency in the fight against the menace of drug abuse in the state.

He, however, appealed to the general public to continue to support and cooperate with the agency in its determined effort to curb illicit drug trafficking in the state. (NAN)
