Kano House of Assembly Speaker vows to probe Emir Sanusi

2 Min Read

The Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Alhaji Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, has shown his determination to see that the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II is not left off hook without him being probed for financial misconduct.

Rurum said this while reacting to a call by a member of the Federal House of Representatives, Aliyu Sani Madakin Gini (APC, Dala) urging the House of Representatives to intervene in the probe of the emir by the Kano Assembly.

He insisted that the House of Representatives has no right to intervene in the ongoing investigation of the Emir, Daily Trust reports.

Rurum pointed out that the constitution which the lawmaker relied on cannot be applicable to Kano state.

According to the Speaker, “The section 14 (2b) of the constitution which Madaki relied upon to back his argument is categorical and cannot be applicable in Kano because the situation on ground did not warrant for that.

“The section says the NASS can intervene in the affairs of state assembly only if the assembly cannot sit or if there is crisis in the house but in our own case, there is nothing like that. Out of the 35 members, 34 voted in support of the investigation, while only one member failed to vote in support. So, the move is completely out of context.”

Rurum insisted that the Kano state House of Assembly is determined to unravel the truth about the eight-count charge levelled against the Emir.

“The 7-man ad-hoc committee saddled with responsibility of investigating the emir is within the ambit of law. We formulated the law that is governing the affairs of the Kano emirate council and with the provision of section 128 of the Constitution, we have the mandate to cross-check its activities whenever the need arise,” he said.

Rerum’s remark is coming at a time the Kano State government anti-corruption agency announced the suspension of its investigation into the finances of the Emirate Council.
