The Kano State Government on Friday reiterated its commitment to initiate more youths empowerment programmes to fight unemployment and poverty in the state.

Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje stated this while declaring open the 2016 International Youth Day celebration in Kano.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the United Nation has set aside Aug. 12 of every year to mark the International Youth Day.

Ganduje said the state government would continue to initiate more youths empowerment programmes in order to train the youth in different skills to reduce unemployment, poverty and other vices in the state.

“Government has done this in the past and is still doing its best to reduce the rate of unemployment, youths’ restiveness, poverty and that is why the government has empowered more than 5,000 youths,’’ he said.

Ganduje also said that the state government had approved more than N2 billion for the construction of an Ultra-modern Youth Acquisition Centre and would be completed before the end of 2016.

He said all hands must be on deck to improve the living standard of youths, adding that youths were the pillars of every society.

The governor then advised youths not to allow themselves to be used for violence and should shun criminal activities in order to earn the trust of the people.

The State Commissioner of Information, Youth and Sports, Malam Muhammad Garba, commended the foresight of the government in training the youth in different skills. (NAN)
