Kano state government has announced that it has paid thirty million naira as cumulative dowry for 1500 brides in the state.
The statement, which was signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Abba Anwar on Sunday, revealed that the brides were selected from a total of 44 local government areas in the state.
According to Abba, some of the funds released for the brides would be used in purchasing basic home furniture such as mirrors, mattresses, and sets of beds, immediately after their mass wedding ceremony on Sunday.
However, each of the brides would still part with N20,000 as their dowry.
The statement reads in part, “While dowry would be paid, it is also part of the magnanimous engagement by the state government that complete sets of beds, side mirrors, wardrobes and mattresses would all be provided for each couple.
“A complete set of cushion chairs would also be given to each and every couple, which includes three-seater chairs and other side chairs. Window blinds and plastic carpets will also be provided.
“New clothing materials, popularly called ‘Shadda’ would be provided for all the would-be husbands, so that they can appear as happily wedded grooms, showcasing their happiness to families, friends and well wishers.”
The press secretary further explained that the government was hoping that the provisions it had made for the newlyweds would help them settle into their marriages without worries.
