The Kano State Government, on Tuesday, donated essential materials worth N10 million to female prison inmates in the state.

Hajiya Zubaida Damakka, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, presented the materials to the Deputy Comptroller of Prisons in the state, Mr Auwalu Disu, in Kano.

Damakka said that the materials included; mattresses, mosquito nets, blankets, sewing machines, hair dressing materials, knitting machines, rubber mats, detergents, sanitary pads, buckets and disinfectants.

She said that the gesture was to enhance the welfare of female prisoners in various prisons across the state

“Life behind bars does not mean you cannot be productive citizens again and this will help prepare you for the society when you are released,” Damakka told the prisoners.

She said her visit to the prison was to identify with the inmates, adding that even though, they had been confined, they were still very important members of the society.

Damakka implored them not to give up on life and advised them to turn a new leaf and look forward to the future with great hope.

Receiving the donation, Disu lauded the gesture and promised to make judicious use of the items.

Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje, had during his visit to the Kano prisons, paid N20 million to settle the fines of more than 500 inmates, languishing in jail for inability to pay their fines.(NAN)
