A shootout has ensued between volunteers wielding Dane guns and at least 90 bandits armed with sophisticated weapons in Kagara town, the headquarters of Rafi local government area of Niger State.
It was gathered that the incident occurred on Wednesday as the bandits who stormed the town on 30 motorcycles around 6:00pm robbed a bank in the community.
Reports say the bandits operated until 7:00pm.
The bandits-turn-bank robbers were reportedly preparing to make away with their loot when they were confronted by the volunteers.
Many people were injured in the incident and are lying helplessly at Kagara General Hospital, Sahara Reporters reported, quoting local Prestige Radio.
Reacting to the incident, Senator for Kaduna Central in the 8th Senate, Senator Shehu Sani called on the government to beef up security in the town which holds many Internally-Displaced Persons (IDPs).
“Kagara the headquarters of Rafi Lg in Niger state has always been insulated from the attacks of armed bandits.
“It hosts thousands of IDPs who made it their new home. The attack on Kagara by Bandits yesterday further compounds the problem. This violence must end now,” Sani stated.
The Niger State Police Command has yet to confirm the incident.
