Just in: One trapped as three-storey building collapses in Lagos

Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) says an uncompleted three-storey building has collapsed at 12 Alasepe Street, off Community Road, Ago Palace Way, Okota in Lagos State.

The LASEMA director-general, Oluwafemi Oke-Osanyintolu, who confirmed the incident, said a yet-to-be-identified man is trapped under the rubble, adding that a rescue operation is ongoing.

Oke-Osanyintolu said: “Upon arrival at the incident scene, it was observed that a three-storey building approaching completion had collapsed.

“An adult male is presently trapped under the rubble and we have commenced a rescue operation. Initial findings revealed that the collapsed building is a three-storey building under construction. The impact of the collapse has affected the adjacent structures but the resultant crowd is under control.

“Extrication and recovery of the trlapped man are ongoing using all emergency light tools at our disposal. Once completed, the remains of the structure will undergo a controlled demolition exercise.”

Earlier, the reported that there was tension at 7, Rufai Street, Makinde, Ojuelegba, as  a two-storey building of 11 flats in the structure collapsed. This was confirmed by the State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).

LASEMA boss, Dr Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, who confirmed the incident, said there was no casualty as occupants quickly vacated the structure before it caved in.

Oke-Osanyintolu said the structure had been marked for demolition and abatement notice served on the occupants to vacate in 2017. And were again served 2019 before the latest eventual collapse.

LASEMA explained further that the state government might likely confiscate the property according to policy of the state government on distressed collapsed structures in the state.
