The Commissioner for Health in Enugu State, Professor Anthony Ugochukwu, has died.
His death comes at a time the country is battling the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
Ugochukwu reportedly died at a private hospital in Enugu, Memphys Hospital on Friday night.
He was said to be suffering from an undisclosed ailment that took him to the United States for treatment.
The commissioner died shortly after his return to Nigeria, following a sudden relapse, the member representing his constituency, Oji River Constituency in the Enugu House of Assembly Hon. Jeff Mbah, confirmed.
“We are talking about a renowned Professor of Surgeon who has a lot to offer in turning around our health sector. It’s a terrible blow,” the The Nation quoted the lawmaker to have said.
The late Ugochukwu was until his death a Consultant Surgeon and immediate past Provost, Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) College of Medicine.
The Herald recalls that Ugochukwu was sworn in as commissioner on September 25, 2019.
