Judge slams ‘stringent’ bail condition on Abia Church of Satan founder

The Founder, Assemblies of Light Bearer Greater Church of Lucifer, popularly known as Church of Satan in Abia State, Ifekwe Udo may not be going home anytime soon owing to the “stringent” bail conditions imposed on him by Justice E Asiago of the Federal High Court sitting in Umuahia.

The police had dragged Udo and 17 youths in Ebem community, Ohafia LGA, where the church is located, to court for rioting and destruction of government property.

The riot followed the death of a young trader identified as Ifeanyi Arunsi.

Justice Asiago on Tuesday granted the accused bail in the sum of N1,000,000 with two sureties each, one of which must be a traditional ruler or recognised chief and a senior civil servant with verifiable addresses.

The judge said the bail defendants’ application for bail followed the motion for their release by their counsel.

The prosecuting counsel, S.A. Ofoegbu did not oppose the bail application.

Counsel to Udo, Ibeka Esq. pleaded with the judge not to grant his client bail with stringent conditions as the community where the church is located was in turmoil.

He explained that as a result of sentiments over the incident, no traditional ruler or chief would like to stand surety for his client.

But Justice Asiago ruled that he would not lower the standard because of the defendant and adjourned the matter to October 13, 2020, for trial.
